The Unknown Project is a Brisbane-based social enterprise working to connect young people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds with resources and opportunities.

our story

At The Unknown Project, our goal is to break down barriers to education for young people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

The concept is simple. First, we receive donations of quality, second-hand books from families, schools and libraries. Then, we wrap them in brown paper to hide each book’s identity and write three clues about the book’s author, plot or genre. Finally, we sell our books for $5 a pop at markets, through local cafes and gift shops. We also take bulk orders for events like conferences, parties and weddings.

With the money we raise, we purchase much needed school supplies and resources for school students from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

So far, we’ve provided families at the Romero Centre with 30 schools supplies pack and 20 laptops, to help kids engage with their education, and go on to do big things.

We hope the power of our books doesn’t stop there. Our motto is don't judge a book by its cover – an accurate metaphor for the stigma faced by many people with refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. The Unknown Project aims to empower people to challenge damaging stereotypes and to promote connection and inclusion for all.
